Whose Calls Do You Answer?

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

Wow! What an amazing Easter Weekend we experienced. Over 100 kids at our Community Easter Egg Hunt. 175 in our morning service with about 25 making either first time or renewed Commitments to Christ! Praise the Lord!

This Sunday, we are about to being a Spring Spiritual Enrichment Adventure called Rendezvous. As you have heard here lately, this will be a 40 day adventure of learning how to encounter God so we “turn our spiritual routine into sacred romance.” It will be a time of learning exercises and practices, as well as having our attitudes and mindset reshaped so we position ourselves to hear, to be touched by, to experience God. I am excited about what God is going to do in me and you as we take this Adventure together.

As I was looking for some illustrations that would help me communicate my point for this Sunday’s sermon, I came across a clip from the movie, The Devil Wears Prada. In this movie, a young lady gets swept into the world of high fashion, and becomes the personal assistant to one of the fashion industries top designer/publishers. Soon, this very average, very common young lady becomes the epitome of what she despises: A person focused on personal appearance and profile. In the midst of this process, the young lady begins to lose those relationships which have been dearest to her for years, including the relationship with her fiancé. In one episode, as the two argue about how their relationship is growing a part because of the controlling antics of the boss, the young ladies phone rings, and guess who it is: her boss . . . again. In disgust, the boyfriend responds, “The one whose calls you answer is the one you are the in relationship with,” and then he turns and walks away.

Wow! How powerful! “The one whose calls you answer is the one you are in the relationship with!” How often do you hear God call? Do you pick up? Do you answer? Or are our lives to busy, to noisy, to cluttered to hear God’s ringtone, God’s voice? Do you take time to turn off the TV or the radio; to walk away from the crowd and be alone in a quiet room or on a trail in order to hear from God? When was the last time you followed God’s directive to “be still and know that I am God?” (Psalms 46:10) Wow! God is really challenging me on this area of my life anew, especially as I begin to take this Rendezvous Adventure with you this spring. It is my prayer that in this focused time of learning and listening that we all will fall in love with God in new ways so that our spiritual routine does truly become a sacred romance.
